Katie Ervin Carlson was born May 8, 1981, in Davenport, Iowa. She grew up in Eldridge, Iowa, and graduated from The University of Iowa in 2003. Katie then attended Drake University Law School, where she served as a junior staff member of the Drake Law Review. Her student note, "A Study of the Effectiveness of Mandated State Contraceptive Coverage in Iowa and Missouri and the Case for a Federal Law," was selected for publication in Drake Law Review's Winter 2006 Insurance Annual.
Katie clerked for Roxanne Conlin & Associates, P.C., gaining experience in the legal fields of employment discrimination, civil rights, personal injury, and anti-trust law. Katie also worked as a student attorney at the Drake Law School Legal Clinic, Center for Children’s Rights, in which she served as attorney and guardian ad litem in Polk County Juvenile Court.
Katie earned her J.D. with High Honors in May 2006, Order of the Coif. She was admitted to practice law in the State of Iowa in September 2006. Since graduating from law school, Katie has practiced employment and civil rights law. She is a member of the National Employment Lawyers Association, Iowa Employment Lawyers Association, Iowa Bar Association, Iowa Trial Lawyers Association, Polk County Bar Association, and Polk County Women Attorneys, on which she serves as a Board Member.
Katie and her husband Travis live in the Beaverdale neighborhood of Des Moines with their son Nile and their black lab Hawkins. In her free time, Katie enjoys spending time with her husband attending Iowa Hawkeye football, summer outdoor festivals, and the local and independent music scene.
