Leonard Bates was born on December 11, 1982, in Kansas City, Missouri. He grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, and graduated from Drake University in 2005. Leonard then attended Drake University Law School where he was a member of the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Team and a First Year Oral Argument Finalist.

Leonard clerked for Dickinson, Mackaman, Tyler & Hagen, PC, gaining experience in the practice fields of employment discrimination, banking law, bankruptcy, and commercial transactions. Leonard also gained experience in the field of international law while studying abroad in Nantes, France.

Leonard earned his J.D. with Honors in May 2008. After graduation, he moved to New York City and was admitted to practice law in the state of New York in June of 2009. While living in New York, Leonard worked with Epiq Bankruptcy Solutions in the field of bankruptcy administration, learning all facets of case management for Chapter 11 filings.

Leonard moved back to Des Moines in early 2011 and began clerking for Newkirk Law Firm. In September of 2011, Leonard became an associate attorney for Newkirk Law Firm after earning admission to practice law in the state of Iowa. He is a member of the Iowa Employment Lawyers Association, Iowa State Bar Association, and the Iowa Association for Justice.
