EQUAL PAY

Under Federal law, an employer may not pay employees doing the same or similar work differently based on gender.  Until recently, women were the only group protected from equal pay differences because of the long history of women receiving much less per hour worked than men.

In 2009, Iowa passed the Iowa Equal Pay Act that extended protection to other groups.  Under Iowa law, an employer may not pay employees doing the same or similar work differently based on the employee’s race, color, gender, pregnancy, religion, national origin, disability, age, sexual orientation or gender identity.  Iowa’s Equal Pay Act ensures that employees performing the same or similar tasks receive equal pay, and that certain employees are not paid less simply by virtue of their race, color, gender, pregnancy, religion, national origin, disability, age, sexual orientation or gender identity.  Employees who work in jobs requiring the same skill, effort and responsibility under similar working conditions must be paid the same.

If you feel that you are being paid less than a counterpart because of your race, color, gender, pregnancy, religion, national origin, disability, marital status, age, familial status, sexual orientation or gender identity, you may have an equal pay claim.
